Short answer: Pick your new brokerage, read your current agreement, plan your pending deals and listings with both brokers, then have your license moved to the new broker with your state regulator. In California you request the change in the DRE's eLicensing system, and it takes effect the day your new responsible broker certifies it (CA DRE: change of responsible broker).
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Compare brokerages using the 20 questions |
| 2 | Read your current agreement: notice period, fees, who keeps listings and pending deals |
| 3 | Make a list of every listing, pending deal and referral you have |
| 4 | Give notice in writing and agree on how each deal will be handled |
| 5 | California: in DRE eLicensing, choose "Change Responsible Broker" and enter the new broker's license number. The new broker then certifies the affiliation online (CA DRE: change of responsible broker). Paper option: form RE 214 |
| 6 | Update the MLS, your board, your E&O, your website, signs and email signature |
| 7 | Let your sphere know with a positive message |
Usually not automatically. Listings are typically the broker's contracts. Ask both brokers before you give notice.
In California the change takes effect the day your new broker certifies it in eLicensing, which can be the same day (CA DRE: change of responsible broker). Your new broker's onboarding may take longer.
